Book launch: The City as a System

On the 14th of November 2023 we celebrate the launch of The City as a System – Metabolic Design for New Urban Forms & Functions with a program of expert talks inspired by the publication. The book delves into envisioning the future of sustainable cities and how we can design them. Difficult problems do not always require far-fetched solutions, but in order to arrive at the solution a change of perspective may be in order. The City as a System advocates such a change in perspective in urban research, arguing that designers must not only focus on the spatial manifestation of a city but also thoroughly investigate the underlying system and the use and appearance of the urban fabric.

For a sustainable city, a transformation of the underlying system is necessary in addition to spatial changes. This leads to new typologies and forms for buildings, neighborhoods, and landscapes. We are currently overexploiting the urban body. How do we manage resources like energy, food, and materials, and how do we create an exchange of byproducts like waste and heat production? How do we respond to new digital measurement and processing techniques through Artificial Intelligence?

We explore these question with a keynote by FABRICations co-founder Eric Frijters and three consecutive parts, each featuring a discussion among experts from different fields and perspectives. Participant including Madeleine Maaskant (Academies of Architecture), Thijs van Spaandonk (FUR / Bright), Matthijs Ponte (FUR), Hans van der Made (Amsterdam Municipality), Hanane Abaydi (FDBCK Agency - Corporate Activists), David Dooghe (FUR / TNO), Johan Snel (AM Area Development) and Devin Diran (TNO).

All discussions will be hosted by Robin Pocornie, focusing on the following themes:

  • Setting the Stage: context, relevance, and necessity of urban metabolism in the contemporary city.

  • Reality: exploring the possibilities and realities of urban metabolism in practice.

  • Government, policies, and citizens: urban metabolism as an integral part of our urban development.

At the end of each part, there will be time for questions and comments from the audience.
