SUM: Presentation of Research Results and Model

During Dutch Design Week the exhibition Smart Urban Mix in the Brainport Region will be on display at Natlab. On the 25th of October, we will reflect on the research project with some of the stakeholders. What are the key findings and insights, and what is the next step for the project?

The study Smart Urban Mix explores the possibilities of enriching the De Run industrial area in Veldhoven with a mix of residential, working, and other amenities. Especially in the Netherlands, where space is limited and there is a high demand for housing, a smart urban mix could provide a solution. The idea for the project was conceived in 2021 when the Architectuurcentrum Eindhoven, in collaboration with Fabrication’s co-founder and director Eric Frijters, explored the theme of smart urban mixing. This exploration led to the desire to further investigate this theme in a specific location, which eventually became De Run. The Metropoolregio Eindhoven provided funding for this purpose.

The design research was conducted by FABRICations, in partnership with Woonbedrijf, GEVA Vastgoed, Fontys, the municipalities of Veldhoven and Eindhoven, Natlab, and the Architecture Center Eindhoven.

The Dutch Design Week is the perfect place to present this future exploration. It is one of the largest design events in Europe, where the work and future concepts of over 2,600 designers from both the Netherlands and abroad are showcased.
