Eric FrijtersFounding Partner / Director
Eric Frijters, founding partner and principal at FABRICations, Professor (Lector) Future Urban Regions (FUR) at the Dutch Academies of Architecture.
Eric has over 10 years of experience in designing and executing projects in architecture, urbanism and consulting in regional strategies in the Netherlands and abroad. He has a background in architecture from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Philosophy at the University of Amsterdam and graduated Cum Laude at the Eindhoven University of Technology. His research has been published in several books and various journals.
Eric has received recognition for his work (with several prizes such as the Prix de Rome and Iakov Chernikhov International Architecture Prize) as a designer, that stands in the field and experiments with innovative architecture, education and research in architecture and urbanism. As of June 2013 Eric has been leading the research group Future Urban Regions which focuses on healthy urbanization, design thinking methodology and testing results for productive strategies on urban metabolism in studios at Academies of Architecture.
Olv KlijnFounding Partner / Director
Olv Klijn is a founding partner and Principal at FABRICations and Assistant Professor at the chair of Dwelling at the Technical University Delft. He studied architecture at the Eindhoven University of Technology and graduated Cum Laude. As an artist in residence at the Banff Centre in Canada, Klijn studied the impact of current urbanization patterns of the American West Coast.
Klijn is (co)author of several books such as ‘VMX Agenda’, ’10 x Den Bosch’, ‘Station Centraal’, ‘Architect by accident’ and ‘The making of …’ and published in various journals. In 2007 he founded FABRICations together with Eric Frijters and has since been involved in the design and research of architecture, urbanism and regional strategies. In 2010 they won the Prix de Rome, the prize for architects under 40 years. In 2011 Klijn was recognized as one of the 40 emerging European architects under 40 years old. One year later he was nominated for the Iakov Chernikhov International Architecture Prize ‘for designers, that stands in the field experiment with innovative architecture, education and research in architecture and urbanism’.
Bas DriessenArchitecture / Urban Design / Research
“Optimism is a responsibility”
Bas is a designer-researcher at FABRICations with training as an architect and urban designer from Eindhoven Technical University.
Bas has worked on a wide range of topics and has experience with design-research and research-by-design on various scales (regional-urban-building). He was project leader for the research project Energy and Space for the Province of Zuid-Holland and Healthy Urbanization for the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment.
His work involves contemporary urban challenges like urban metabolism, bicycle infrastructure & sustainable mobility, energy transition landscapes and regional economies and identities.
Next to projects spread over the Netherlands and Belgium, Bas also worked on projects in and around Brazil, Albania and South-Africa. You may have seen his work at the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam or in the report ‘Amsterdam Circular – A Vision and Roadway for the City and Region’ (Amsterdam 2015).
Next to his office work, Bas really enjoys working with students in lectures and at design and research studios at several academies and universities.
Rens WijnakkerLandscape Architecture / Research
Landscape architect Rens Wijnakker works as project leader on a range of regional and urban projects in the Netherlands and Belgium. Trained at Wageningen University, he specialized in circular regional strategies and urban metabolism through various projects including Urban Metabolism Rotterdam (2014) and Buiksloterham Circulair (2016) . Besides these strategic projects, he worked on designs for gardens, public spaces and urban developments. In these more ‘traditional’ projects, he continuously makes an effort to integrate circular principles into the design, adding a meaningful layer to the space people live in. Knowledge developed in a strategic way becomes operational.
In 2011, he won the runner-up award at the Europan 11 competition. Next to his work at FABRICations, Rens is a guest teacher at the architecture department of Delft University and has lectured for a variety of universities and institutions in the Netherlands and worldwide.
Ivo ClasonArchitecture / Interior Design / Construction
Ivo Clason is a Dutch architect working since 2015 with FABRICations on several architecture and interior architectural projects.
With a background in Building Environment at the Avans hogeschool Den Bosch and Architectural Design at the Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, he is currently finishing his Master of Architecture at the Academie of bouwkunst in Amsterdam. Learning through research by design and intensive material research in Japan, he is focused on the use and possibilities of materials in order to make spaces. With a good eye for detail he is part of the architectural agenda of FABRICations.
Caterina VetrugnoArchitecture / Urban Design / Research / Exhibition Design
Caterina Vetrugno is an Italian architect and urban designer collaborating with Fabric since 2015 on international projects regarding Urban Metabolism. She obtained her Master degree in Paris in 2014 after passing through the Politecnico di Milano and the Architecture School of Lyon. Alongside her studies she has contributed to different architectural and urban practices such as Christian de Portzamparc and Jean Nouvel in Paris, UrbaLab and MRP in Lyon.
At Fabric she gives her contribution through research by design projects but also managing Human Resources and occasional external collaborations.
Duong BuiUrban Design / Research
Originally an architect from Vietnam, Duong has enriched his knowledge in urban design and planning through higher education in Belgium and Germany as well as diverse working experiences in Rotterdam and Amsterdam.
Duong is skilled in developing territorial strategies based on descriptive mapping and design-based research. He strives to form realistic visions and concrete solutions for each project while developing a self-explanatory visual language to express them.
At FABRICations, Duong commits to various projects; each offers intriguing analytical and visual challenges. They motivates him to come up with innovative solutions which, on one hand, appeal to specific preconditions of the projects and, on the other hand, provide new dimensions to aesthetic aspects.
Luca De StefanoArchitecture / Urban Design / Business Development
Luca, originally from Rome, received most of his design education around Europe between Spain (ETSA Granada) and the Netherlands (TU Delft). In combination with a research-oriented architectural background, he has also cultivated an interest in management and marketing by attending specializations and short programs in digital marketing, project management, investment in infrastructure, and business innovationHe has established various multimedia projects such as the on-line magazine 3nta.com and the open-source research platform Non Architecture.
Luca has developed a multidisciplinary approach to the practice of design, and, with FABRICations, he has found a shared vision for a broader role of the designer. At FABRICations, Luca is implementing his skills of strategical thinking and storytelling, contributing to the development of new design opportunities, and coordinating the communication efforts of the office. He approaches new projects with an analytical mindset, to ensure all clients and stakeholders involved are represented in the most effective way.
Lukas is post graduate trainee originally from Vilnius, Lithuania, with a bachelor’s degree in architecture ( VGTU, Vilnius). For the last year and a half of his undergraduate degree, he was analyzing urban structures, working on urban regeneration and design projects.
As a trainee at FABRICations, Lukas aims to use and improve his argumentative part of genre of urban design, analysis and urban strategies.
Piero VidoniArchitecture / Urban Design
Piero Vidoni was born in Udine, Italy. He moved to Venice in order to attend the I.U.A.V. University of Venice where he received a bachelor’s in Science of Architecture. He completed his education in Warsaw, Poland, where he started to investigate themes of re-use, re-cycle and circular economies. One of his projects about the metabolic movement was published in the book “Radical Reassembles”.
In 2015 he started a masters course at the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam. The same year, Piero joined the team at FABRICations where he is implementing his sustainable approach and abilities in visionary solutions for modern challenges. On a daily basis, Piero contributes his graphic representation skills for innovative projects and international scenarios in the studio.
Yingzi WangLandscape Architecture / Urban Design
Yingzi, a Chinese girl who loves movies, graduated from Xi’an University of Architecture Technology and is doing her master of landscape architecture at Wageningen University and Research Center. She is experienced with (micro) climate-responsive design and urban design, with a basic understanding of water systems. She is skilled in information visualization, graphic site analysis and design. After participating in the Hart van Holland-water en Biodiversiteit project at FABRICations and being inspired by Rotterdam Metabolism, she has a great interest in urban metabolism and is developing her thesis on relevant topics using a similar research based design method.
Hongjuan ZhangLandscape Architecture
Hongjuan, originally from China, is an outgoing girl who loves travelling and experiencing different cultures. After graduating with a bachelor’s of landscape architecture in China, she is continuing her studies of Landscape Architecture in France. She is currently an exchange student at the Academy of Architecture of Amsterdam.
Hongjuan is experienced in water management and greenway design, and pays extra attention to social issues, human activities and culture in her designs. She enjoys the international and research environment at FABRICations where she can exchange ideas with people from various background.
Marco ChowArchitecture / Urban Design
Marco is currently continuing his studies in Architecture at the University of Waterloo in Canada. Previous work experience in Toronto and Victoria has given him a wide range of exposure to different typologies within architecture and urbanism. His travels within Canada, the United States, and China play an important role in designing holistically, taking references from his experiences. With an interest in using architecture as a vehicle for change, he strives to creatively approach problems to produce elegant design solutions.
At FABRICations, he regularly uses 3D modelling software, rendering programs, and Adobe Suite to depict architectural and urban design strategies. His role at FABRICations provides him with the opportunity to test graphical techniques which serve to enhance the storytelling of projects. He approaches projects with enthusiasm and energy with the intention of learning new knowledge with his coworkers.
Zoe GoodmanArchitecture / Urban Design
Zoe is a Canadian architecture student from Toronto, studying at the University of Waterloo. She has worked at architecture firms in Vancouver and New York City, where she worked with teams of architects and engineers contributing to a range of architectural project types in schematic design.
Zoe developed an appreciation for the natural world after spending her summers outdoors in northern Ontario and in Canada’s Rocky Mountains. This appreciation along with a passion for art and design led to her interest in sustainable architecture and design. At FABRICations, Zoe found shared values in a vision for a sustainable future and desire to create beautiful analytical drawings. At the office she has been using 3-D modeling and rendering software along with adobe creative suite to test new graphic styles used to visualize various projects and concepts.
Sam is a M. Arch I Candidate at the Yale School of Architecture and received his BA in Urban Studies from Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design. He has worked across design disciplines, managing the permanent construction of Brown/RISD’s entry into the 2014 Solar Decathlon Europe competition and founding a technology company that launched in the iTunes app store in 2012. At FABRIC and in his future work, Sam hopes to interrogate the role of the architect beyond the illustrator of requests devised by consultants to the designer who proposes spatial solutions.
