Eric FrijtersFounding Partner / Director
Eric Frijters, founding partner and principal at FABRICations, Professor (Lector) Future Urban Regions (FUR) at the Dutch Academies of Architecture.
Eric has over 10 years of experience in designing and executing projects in architecture, urbanism and consulting in regional strategies in the Netherlands and abroad. He has a background in architecture from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Philosophy at the University of Amsterdam and graduated Cum Laude at the Eindhoven University of Technology. His research has been published in several books and various journals.
Eric has received recognition for his work (with several prizes such as the Prix de Rome and Iakov Chernikhov International Architecture Prize) as a designer, that stands in the field and experiments with innovative architecture, education and research in architecture and urbanism. As of June 2013 Eric has been leading the research group Future Urban Regions which focuses on healthy urbanization, design thinking methodology and testing results for productive strategies on urban metabolism in studios at Academies of Architecture.
Olv KlijnFounding Partner / Director
Olv Klijn is a founding partner and Principal at FABRICations and Assistant Professor at the chair of Dwelling at the Technical University Delft. He studied architecture at the Eindhoven University of Technology and graduated Cum Laude. As an artist in residence at the Banff Centre in Canada, Klijn studied the impact of current urbanization patterns of the American West Coast.
Klijn is (co)author of several books such as ‘VMX Agenda’, ’10 x Den Bosch’, ‘Station Centraal’, ‘Architect by accident’ and ‘The making of …’ and published in various journals. In 2007 he founded FABRICations together with Eric Frijters and has since been involved in the design and research of architecture, urbanism and regional strategies. In 2010 they won the Prix de Rome, the prize for architects under 40 years. In 2011 Klijn was recognized as one of the 40 emerging European architects under 40 years old. One year later he was nominated for the Iakov Chernikhov International Architecture Prize ‘for designers, that stands in the field experiment with innovative architecture, education and research in architecture and urbanism’.
Bas DriessenArchitecture / Urban Design / Research
“Optimism is a responsibility”
Bas is a designer-researcher at FABRICations with training as an architect and urban designer from Eindhoven Technical University.
Bas has worked on a wide range of topics and has experience with design-research and research-by-design on various scales (regional-urban-building). He was project leader for the research project Energy and Space for the Province of Zuid-Holland and Healthy Urbanization for the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment.
His work involves contemporary urban challenges like urban metabolism, bicycle infrastructure & sustainable mobility, energy transition landscapes and regional economies and identities.
Next to projects spread over the Netherlands and Belgium, Bas also worked on projects in and around Brazil, Albania and South-Africa. You may have seen his work at the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam or in the report ‘Amsterdam Circular – A Vision and Roadway for the City and Region’ (Amsterdam 2015).
Next to his office work, Bas really enjoys working with students in lectures and at design and research studios at several academies and universities.
Rens WijnakkerLandscape Architecture / Research
Landscape architect Rens Wijnakker works as project leader on a range of regional and urban projects in the Netherlands and Belgium. Trained at Wageningen University, he specialized in circular regional strategies and urban metabolism through various projects including Urban Metabolism Rotterdam (2014) and Buiksloterham Circulair (2016) . Besides these strategic projects, he worked on designs for gardens, public spaces and urban developments. In these more ‘traditional’ projects, he continuously makes an effort to integrate circular principles into the design, adding a meaningful layer to the space people live in. Knowledge developed in a strategic way becomes operational.
In 2011, he won the runner-up award at the Europan 11 competition. Next to his work at FABRICations, Rens is a guest teacher at the architecture department of Delft University and has lectured for a variety of universities and institutions in the Netherlands and worldwide.
Caterina VetrugnoArchitecture / Urban Design / Research / Exhibition Design
Caterina Vetrugno is an Italian architect and urban designer collaborating with Fabric since 2015 on international projects regarding Urban Metabolism. She obtained her Master degree in Paris in 2014 after passing through the Politecnico di Milano and the Architecture School of Lyon. Alongside her studies she has contributed to different architectural and urban practices such as Christian de Portzamparc and Jean Nouvel in Paris, UrbaLab and MRP in Lyon.
At Fabric she gives her contribution through research by design projects but also managing Human Resources and occasional external collaborations.
Duong BuiUrban Design / Research
Originally an architect from Vietnam, Duong has enriched his knowledge in urban design and planning through higher education in Belgium and Germany as well as diverse working experiences in Rotterdam and Amsterdam.
Duong is skilled in developing territorial strategies based on descriptive mapping and design-based research. He strives to form realistic visions and concrete solutions for each project while developing a self-explanatory visual language to express them.
At FABRICations, Duong commits to various projects; each offers intriguing analytical and visual challenges. They motivates him to come up with innovative solutions which, on one hand, appeal to specific preconditions of the projects and, on the other hand, provide new dimensions to aesthetic aspects.
Luca De StefanoArchitecture / Urban Design / Business Development
Luca, originally from Rome, received most of his design education around Europe between Spain (ETSA Granada) and the Netherlands (TU Delft). In combination with a research-oriented architectural background, he has also cultivated an interest in management and marketing by attending specializations and short programs in digital marketing, project management, investment in infrastructure, and business innovationHe has established various multimedia projects such as the on-line magazine 3nta.com and the open-source research platform Non Architecture.
Luca has developed a multidisciplinary approach to the practice of design, and, with FABRICations, he has found a shared vision for a broader role of the designer. At FABRICations, Luca is implementing his skills of strategical thinking and storytelling, contributing to the development of new design opportunities, and coordinating the communication efforts of the office. He approaches new projects with an analytical mindset, to ensure all clients and stakeholders involved are represented in the most effective way.
Irene Luque MartinResearch / Urban Design
Alessandra RiccettiSustainable Design / Urban Design
Max AugustijnResearch / Business Development
Max is an interdisciplinary design researcher who does not believe there is only one side to the story. Throughout his studies in Amsterdam (UvA), London (UAL) and Barcelona (ELISAVA), he was educated in Psychology, Business Administration and Design Research and developed a theoretical framework based on socioeconomic, cultural and psychological perspectives. While focusing on organizational strategy for the creative industries during his academic career, he experienced the international music industry first-hand with the rock band LICK and provided graphic design, design research and communications for several organizations.
At FABRICations, Max is part of the research team and facilitates organizational processes on the background. Having an affinity with immersive aesthetics and precise writing, he sees graphic design and storytelling as bridging components for communicating research and maintaining external relations. Taken together, Max hopes to foster an expertise in holistic urban analysis, graphic design and business development during his tenure with FABRICations.
Hesse de JongeUrban Development / Urban Design
Currently studying Built Environment; Bouwkunde, at the University of Applied Sciences in Amsterdam, Hesse is exploring in the professional context of FABRICations his set of interests and talents.
After the first year of his studies in which he learned about a variety of aspects of architectural engineering, which for example included water management and the economic part of architecture, he chose to specialize in Urban Design and Urban Planning. He’s very interested in circular cities in combination with urban planning.
For six months he’s enthusiastically going to implement his variety of skills in the projects FABRICations is working on. He’s also applying his knowledge about Amsterdam and designing and modeling skills to the current projects.
Lea SoretArchitecture / Urban Design
Lea is a young French architect who has completed her studies between Lille, Ghent and Brussels. After diverse working experiences, counting a participation to the IABR 2016, she decided to go deeper into research by design and starts a second master of Urbanism at the Architecture Academy of Amsterdam.
Fascinated by long term urban analysis, productive environment and transition, she is joining the team of FABRICations in order to dig in the numerous challenges of the contemporary urban metabolism.
Yinyin LiuLandscape Design / Installations Design / Research
Yinyin Liu is a landscape architect and researcher specialized in experience design and waterscape by integrating both cultural and ecological, eastern and western approach. In 2012 she obtained her master degree from landscape department of Wageningen University with a honored research-thesis (Dutch National Best Thesis Prize, Top3 by IIAS and Best Thesis by WUR): the Ecological Aesthetics of Water and Waterscape. After graduation she continued her career as a designer and project leader in the Netherlands with mainly two types of projects: e.g. environmental arts and installation design, water related landscape planning and design. Several exhibitions and parks were build under her management and construction supervision. At the same time, she is an awarded photographer with solo exhibitions in China and Netherlands respectively. She is always enthusing to reveal the invisible beauty of nature, as one of her mission as a landscape architect.
Currently in FABRICations, she shifts her focus from practical design to research, for developing and bridging the knowledge and thoughts of both.
Grazia Tona was born in Loreto, Italy. She is an Italian Architect, graduated at the University of Camerino. Her background is mainly design oriented, with a focus on technologies of architectural construction, combined with strategies for urban regeneration.
During her studies and working experiences, carried on between Italy and the Netherlands, Grazia developed an interest in architectural and urban research, especially investigating the way social, political and economic factors can shape the built environment.
As an intern in FABRICations Grazia is willing to acquire a multidisciplinary approach to the design, bringing together theoretical activities with professional practice.
Marcello ViettiRsearch / Urban Design
Marcello Vietti was born in Turin, Italy. As recent MSc graduate in Urbanism from Delft University of Technology, with a BSc degree in Architecture from Politecnico di Torino, he has recently joined our team as urban designer trainee.
Throughout his studies and professional experiences, he has gained a comprehensive knowledge in the field of urban planning and design and, when it comes to urban projects, he believes in a holistic and interdisciplinary approach. As a matter of fact, fascinated by the relation between urban forms and urban micro-climate, Marcello investigated the link between air pollution and urban forms in the city of Turin as graduation project.
At FABRICations, Marcello aims to shape his professional figure towards a research by design approach.
Wesley VerhoevenArchitecture / Urban Design
Wesley studied architecture at the Technical University of Delft and graduated Cum Laude. He has a genuine interest in the approach of design through research, investigating different aspects of our society such as, material cycles, social structures and local identities. In combination with his passion to travel he aims to respond meaningfully to tangible and intangible structures of a specific area. This approach is clearly manifested in his graduation project which was nominated for several awards among which the National Archiprix.
At FABRICations Wesley follows a research and design approach where different methodologies are applied based on the unique conditions of each projects. He contributes with a keen eye for design, graphics, storytelling and analytical-thinking in order to create meaningful interventions and strategies.
